Social Media Exploitation & Women of Pakistan

Let’s start with paying heartfelt gratitude, respect, and honor to all the women in this country. Mothers who have raised all of us, sisters who taught us what endless love is, daughters who complete every family, wives who bring harmony in every household, and then all-female relatives and friends. The pain you are going through right now is understandable, however, the confusion among your ranks is extremely disturbing. Disorientation in your game plan and your herd mentality is adding fuel to fire.

Recent events in our society have triggered a debate, where frustration and anger can be seen in every other hashtag or Instagram post. Prevailing hatred and negativity have overshadowed all relationships, and now the gap between the genders has widened even further. Analyzing the situation we can find multiple layered confusion, irrational sweeping statements, and no solid argument to back it up with. Social media exploitation, hashtags such as #NOTALLMEN # ROTICANWAIT #BREAKALEG and many more are highly disappointing, to say the least.

First of all, when we tell you not every man is the same, it is just to reassure you, that we are around, standing by you. Nothing can harm you, because not all men think the same. Of course, roti can wait, you are not supposed to do it anyway, it can be taken care of. However, if you posted this on your social media, be honest and ask yourself, when was the last time you made a roti. Breaking a leg needs a round of applause because it looks like the maker was intoxicated. Fighting against the violence, with the violence? Did you mean Self-Defense? Did you know about this word?

Social Media is a weapon, use it wisely, do not get carried away with every trend you see. Stop comparing yourself to the western world, we have different ground realities. By all means, go for your rights, but first, identify them. Living in this country, are you home-bound? Is there a restriction on you to go out, and meet people, or wear certain clothes? If yes, then talk to the men of your house, it is their fault, the society has nothing to do with it. In case, unwanted advances were made to you by men in your family, then stand against them, if it was done by an outsider, ask your men to stand by you. Pakistan has particular issues when it comes to different parts of the society, but that does not mean the entire society or country is to be blamed.

In the UK alone, there were over 1000 acid attacks in the last 10 years. At the end of March-20, over 58,000 rape cases were reported in the UK alone. The point is not to suppress your voice, it is just to identify that atrocities are part of every society. Let us work together to fix it, if you widen this gap, you can't fix it alone, please understand this. At Noor’s candlelight vigil, there were equal or more men than women, no further evidence of our support is required. Last but not the least, if you believe that men were part of the problem, then the women who stayed quiet were part of a bigger problem. Stop making only noise, stand up, and make the difference. Butch up! Little missy, butch up now.
